Beta App Review

Beta App Review is the check a build passes before external TestFlight testers can install it, and it is a lighter pass than the review that gates the App Store itself.

It only applies to external testers. Internal testers, meaning people with a role on your App Store Connect account, get builds with no review at all. Send a build to an external group and its status becomes Waiting for Beta App Review until Apple clears it.

What it wants before it will even start: a beta app description, a feedback email address, and a demo account plus sign-in notes if any part of the app is behind a login. Reviewers who cannot get in will reject the beta for exactly that, the same as full review would.

What it checks is closer to safety and basic function than to the full guidelines. Obviously objectionable content, an app that will not launch, or something that clearly breaks the rules gets stopped. Fine points of business model, metadata accuracy and design are largely a full review problem.

Subsequent builds of the same version often clear faster or without a fresh review, though Apple does not commit to that.

Do not read approval here as a signal about the App Store. Different reviewers, different bar, different questions.
